Looking for dog beaches worldwide? Our guide to the 25 best dog-friendly beaches in the world covers off-leash beaches across the US, Europe, Australia, and beyond. This guide is Florida-specific: the 15 best off-leash spots across both coasts with current seasonal rules, rinsing stations, and parking logistics.
Updated for 2026: Beach rules, seasonal restrictions, and parking details verified for the current season.
The first time I took my Labrador mix to Fort De Soto’s dog beach in Tierra Verde, I understood immediately why Florida is considered one of the best states in the country for traveling with dogs. Soft white sand, calm Gulf water, a proper rinsing station at the entrance, and dogs — everywhere — sprinting into waves, digging enthusiastic holes, and general doing what dogs do when given unrestricted access to a beach. My dog Daisy, who had never seen the ocean, hit the water at full speed and turned to look at me with an expression I can only describe as disbelief that this was allowed.
Florida has a genuinely excellent collection of off-leash dog beaches, spread across both coasts. They vary from the pristine Gulf Coast parks with powder-soft sand to the more rugged Atlantic beaches where waves are bigger and the crowd is more local. Here are the top 15, with everything you need to know to visit each.
What Makes a Great Dog Beach in Florida
True off-leash dog beaches in Florida differ from the “dogs allowed on leash” beaches that most Florida public beaches technically permit. The best dog beaches offer:
- Designated off-leash zones with clear signage and fenced or natural boundaries
- Rinsing stations for sandy, salty dogs post-swim
- Waste bag dispensers (or at minimum, close trash access)
- Shade structures or trees for dogs that overheat
- Parking that’s reasonably close to the beach access point
- Calm or manageable surf appropriate for dogs
Florida’s heat is the main practical challenge. The Gulf Coast beaches tend to have calmer water (better for inexperienced swimmers and for retrieving), while Atlantic beaches have more wave action. Both coasts get hot: May through September water temperatures are comfortable but air temperatures and direct sun can be dangerous for dogs. Early morning (before 9 AM) and late afternoon (after 4 PM) are the best times to visit in summer. Dogs with short or light-colored coats, pink noses, or exposed ear tips should have a pet-safe sunscreen applied before extended beach sessions.
Gulf Coast Dog Beaches
1. Fort De Soto Park (Tierra Verde, near St. Petersburg)
Fort De Soto consistently ranks as the best dog beach in Florida by multiple national publications and dog travel sites, and the designation is earned. The park’s dog beach at the north end of the island features:
- Large off-leash area on soft white sand
- Calm, shallow Gulf water ideal for all swim levels
- Dedicated rinsing stations at the beach entrance
- Parking lot adjacent to the beach (arrive early — fills by 9 AM on weekends)
- Shade trees along the perimeter
The park itself is beautiful beyond the dog beach — historic fortifications, bayside picnic areas, and one of the best Gulf sunset views in Florida. Make a day of it. Dogs on leash are welcome throughout the park; the off-leash area is specifically designated.
Hours: 7 AM to sunset Fee: Pinellas County resident fee structure; non-residents pay a small parking fee
2. Brohard Paw Park (Venice, Sarasota County)
Sarasota County’s only dedicated dog-friendly beach, Brohard Paw Park combines a fenced dog park (separate sections for large and small dogs) with direct access to a stretch of Gulf beach where dogs can run and swim.
The beach here is quieter than Fort De Soto and the crowd skews more local. Venice itself is charming — it’s known as the shark tooth capital of the world, and the beach is a popular spot for fossil hunting alongside dog walks.
Hours: Sunrise to sunset Fee: Small day use fee or annual pass
3. Bonita Beach Dog Park (Fort Myers Beach area)
Bonita Beach Dog Park is positioned along the edge of Lover’s Key State Park in Lee County, with off-leash beach access to calm shallow Gulf waters. The setting is particularly beautiful — surrounded by natural preserve on three sides, with clear water and white sand.
The park has separate small and large dog areas, waste stations, and rinsing facilities. For travelers staying in the Naples or Fort Myers area, this is the closest quality off-leash option.
Hours: Sunrise to sunset
4. Rotary Dog Beach (Gulfport, St. Petersburg area)
A smaller but beloved local beach park in Gulfport (a quirky arts town adjacent to St. Petersburg), Rotary Dog Beach offers an off-leash area directly on Tampa Bay. The water is calmer than the open Gulf, and the neighborhood atmosphere is friendly and social.
For travelers already in St. Petersburg, it’s a solid alternative to Fort De Soto if you don’t want to make the drive to Tierra Verde.
5. Honeymoon Island State Park (Dunedin)
Honeymoon Island is one of the most scenic state parks on Florida’s Gulf Coast, and it maintains a designated pet-friendly beach area on its northern end. Dogs on leash are allowed throughout much of the park, with a specific area designated for more relaxed dog beach time.
The park charges a standard Florida State Park vehicle entry fee. The beach is wide, relatively uncrowded compared to commercial dog beach parks, and the water is famously clear.
Entry fee: Standard Florida State Parks admission

6. Perdido Key River Road Park (Pensacola area)
Out on Florida’s panhandle, Perdido Key River Road Park is one of the few genuinely off-leash beach options in the Pensacola area. The fenced-off area gives dogs access to Gulf of Mexico water in a contained zone, and the panhandle’s emerald-green water is among the most beautiful beach water in the state.
This is a local beach — it doesn’t have the amenities of Fort De Soto — but the setting is stunning and the crowds are manageable.
Atlantic Coast Dog Beaches
7. Jupiter Dog Beach (Jupiter, Palm Beach County)
Jupiter Dog Beach is consistently ranked among the top off-leash dog beaches in the entire United States. The designated off-leash section runs along A1A near Ocean Cay Park, and the beach is wide, long, and well-maintained.
Jupiter’s Atlantic surf is more energetic than the Gulf Coast options, which some dogs (and owners) prefer. The dog-friendly section has clear signage and the adjacent areas have good parking access.
Jupiter is in northern Palm Beach County, making it the best option for travelers staying in the Palm Beach area.
8. Walton Rocks Dog Beach (Jensen Beach, Martin County)
At 24 acres, Walton Rocks is one of the largest dedicated off-leash dog beach areas in Florida. The scale alone sets it apart — most dog beaches in Florida are relatively compact, but Walton Rocks gives dogs enough room to really run.
The beach is along the Atlantic in Martin County, a less-developed stretch of the Treasure Coast. The area is quieter than Palm Beach or Broward county beaches, making it a good choice for dogs that do better with fewer distractions.
9. Canova Dog Beach (Indian Harbour Beach, Brevard County)
Canova Dog Beach on Florida’s Space Coast offers a 1,000-foot stretch of Atlantic beach designated for off-leash fun from sunrise to sunset. The Atlantic waves here are gentle enough for most dogs while still providing more wave action than Gulf beaches.
Brevard County also has multiple other pet-friendly beach access points along the Space Coast — more than most Florida counties — making the area generally dog-travel-friendly.
10. Ormond Beach Dog Beach (Ormond Beach, Volusia County)
The Volusia County area, which includes Daytona Beach, has a designated dog beach section at Ormond Beach. Volusia County is famous for drive-on beach access throughout the county (a Florida tradition), and the Ormond Beach dog area offers both drive-on access (in your vehicle) and off-leash zones for dogs.
The beach here is wide and flat, typical of northeast Florida’s Atlantic coast. The crowds are thinner than Daytona proper.
North Florida and Panhandle
11. Dog Island (Franklin County)
A remote barrier island accessible only by boat, Dog Island in the Florida Panhandle is as close to a private dog paradise as Florida offers. There are no public services on the island — no parking lot, no rinsing station, no amenities — but for dogs and owners willing to charter a boat or kayak over from Carrabelle, the entire island is effectively your dog’s playground.
Dog Island is an undeveloped state-protected island with several miles of deserted beach. Dogs can run freely in an environment that has essentially no commercial footprint. It requires planning and boat logistics, but the experience is unlike any other dog beach in Florida.
12. St. George Island State Park Dog Area (Apalachicola area)
St. George Island State Park in the Panhandle has a designated off-leash beach area at the eastern end of the island (the undeveloped state park section, not the developed western portion). The park features one of the most pristine stretches of beach in Florida — white sand, clear emerald water, minimal crowds.
The state park charges standard admission, and the off-leash area requires a short walk from the parking lot. Worth it entirely.
Entry fee: Standard Florida State Parks admission
13. Ponce Inlet Dog Beach (Ponce Inlet, Volusia County)
South of Daytona, Ponce Inlet maintains a popular dog-friendly beach area near the historic Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse. The beach here is wide and Atlantic-facing, and the historic lighthouse provides a distinctive backdrop.
The dog beach area in Ponce Inlet is one of the more active social scenes on Florida’s Atlantic coast — the regulars here are committed dog beach-goers and the atmosphere is friendly.

Florida Keys: Dog Beach Options
14. Higgs Beach Dog Park (Key West)
Key West’s only designated off-leash dog area, Higgs Beach Dog Park is a fenced off-leash park adjacent to the Atlantic. It’s not a sprawling beach — it’s relatively compact — but for travelers in Key West (one of the most dog-friendly cities in the South), it’s the place to go.
The park has shade, benches for owners, and direct access to a small beach section. Key West’s relaxed attitude extends to dogs, and the park is a social hub for the island’s dog community.
15. Marathon Area Bayside Parks
Marathon in the middle Keys has several small bayside parks and access points where dogs can swim in the calm, clear water of Florida Bay. It’s not a formal designated off-leash beach but the bayside areas throughout Marathon are informally dog-welcoming, especially on weekday mornings.
Essential Florida Dog Beach Tips
Heat management is critical. Florida’s sand absorbs heat rapidly. By midday in summer, beach sand can reach 130°F — hot enough to burn paw pads in seconds. Test the sand with your hand before walking your dog, and limit midday beach visits May through September.
Rinse after salt water. Salt water and sand cause skin irritation with repeated exposure. Rinse your dog after every ocean swim, paying attention to groin area, armpits, and between toe pads.
Watch for jellyfish. Portuguese Man O’ War wash ashore regularly on both Florida coasts. These are not true jellyfish but are venomous — a dog that steps on or mouths one requires immediate veterinary attention.
Hydration: Dogs exercising in Florida heat can become dehydrated surprisingly fast. Bring more water than you think you need. A collapsible bowl and a large water bottle are non-negotiable beach gear.
Leash rules: Even at off-leash beaches, maintaining voice control is important. Most incidents at dog beaches involve off-leash dogs approaching unfamiliar dogs at high speed. Watch for body language signals and intervene early.
